Nova Friburgo is situated in a valley among the mountains, 2,788 feet above sea level, and 85 miles away from the city of Rio de Janeiro (2 1/2 hours drive).

The region is considered to be a true ecological sanctuary, for it is part of the 5% that remained from the original Atlantic Rain Forest.
Places like the Ecological Reserve of Macaé de Cima (with 37,050 acres), Caledônia (with 8,398 acres), Salinas (with 9,880 acres), Lumiar, and São Pedro da Serra still keep their native vegetation alive and well preserved .

Here there were found rare species of the flora and fauna, many of which were considered extinct, as the nail-sized orange toad (Brachycephalus eohippus), or in serious danger of extinction, as the little golden lion-monkey (Leontopithecus rosalia).

The rich flora (838 species known, so far), which includes orchids (more than 270 species) and bromelias, is favoured by the altitude and great humidity.
