Nova Friburgo is situated in a valley among the mountains, 2,788 feet above sea level, and 85 miles away from the city of Rio de Janeiro (2 1/2 hours drive). The region is
considered to be a true ecological sanctuary, for it is part of the 5% that remained from
the original Atlantic Rain Forest. Here there were found rare species of the flora and fauna, many of which were considered extinct, as the nail-sized orange toad (Brachycephalus eohippus), or in serious danger of extinction, as the little golden lion-monkey (Leontopithecus rosalia). The rich flora (838 species known, so far), which includes orchids (more than 270 species) and bromelias, is favoured by the altitude and great humidity. |
